Today, we are more aware of the impact our actions have had and will continue to have on our environment. With increased awareness and a goal to reduce the impacts on future generations, we can all make a difference. The intention of this CEU is to highlight the movement of transparency and sustainability in the built environment. This course will examine sustainable design, the green building movement, sustainable leather and how it contributes to LEED buildings.
Lesson 1: What is Sustainable Design?
In lesson 1, we take a look at sustainability in the broad sense, discussing both the key principles of sustainable design and the green building movement as well as the benefits of sustainable design in our world today.
Lesson 2: What is LEED?
The United States Green Building Challenge’s LEED rating system is the most widely used building rating system in the world. In this lesson, a full explanation of LEED and its history are covered. In addition, designers will learn the various LEED project types, prerequisites and credits as well as the levels of certification for LEED projects.
Lesson 3: What is Olive Tanning and Why is it Sustainable?
Olive tanning is an innovation in the future of tanning technology. In this lesson Designers will learn how a failure in the production of a food additive lead to innovation in the tanning industry. What makes Olive Tanning unique is the use of 2 by-products that would otherwise be destroyed in creating a usable material that is not only beautiful, but also durable and long lasting.
Lesson 4: What is DECLARE and How Does It Contribute to LEED?
In the final lesson, the Declare program is introduced. We will connect the Declare label to LEED projects and other certification platforms. Learners will discover how to search for Declare labeled products and utilize them in LEED projects to maximize the number of points awarded during certification.
