Last week, we opened the doors to our first-ever retail shop at our Forest, VA headquarters. Our shop will feature a limited and rotating selection of hides from our extensive leather library. Hides will be sold at a flat rate price for walk-in customers. In addtion to full hide sales, there will also be a small selection of home goods and furniture. We are excited about this new venture and we cannot wait to see our leather used on our customers projects. The Moore & Giles leather shop will be open on the last Wednesday of every month from 9am-4pm [1081 Tannery Row, Forest, VA, 24551].
Recently, President Sackett Wood and the leadership team of Moore & Giles sat together and began the arduous process of crafting an updated mission statement that reflects our work as we head into 2016. We wanted this to act as a compass to direct our tomorrows and at the same time a mission that would have hung above the front door of the original Jefferson Street office in 1933.
As each member of the team shared their hearts and what motivates their work it became very clear the core mission of each person was unified around the goals to: ENRICH, INSPIRE & SERVE our customers, our people and our community. These three actions are true as we sell the world’s finest leather and bags, or as we are working downtown to help our neighbors.
The gentlemanly principles that guided Donald Graeme Moore and Vernon Giles still guide us today. They have been passed down directly from them to Chairmen Don Giles and now to a new generation of leadership. In almost 83 years of business our core values remain true – KINDNESS, PERSEVERANCE, CREATIVITY, AUTHENTICITY & HUMILITY. These letters are more than words, they are how we strive to live our lives. It is our desire that they are bone-deep for every one of our almost 100 employees.

In the heart of Buckhead lies the stately St. Regis. There is where you will find Atlas. A beautifully touchable, but luxurious fine dining space developed by Tavistock Group and designed by The Johnson Studio in Atlanta. Along the perfectly lacquered walls and trim you will find an unmatched collection of rare art that joins you for dinner by the ilk of Picasso and van Gogh. In remarkable parallel to the way we view leather, Atlas celebrates the very best in seasonal American cuisine combined with European influences. With a focus on curating fresh ingredients from local farms, this chef-driven restaurant brings an unparalleled culinary experience to the capital of the South. Atlas is one of 14 award-winning brands operated by Tavistock Restaurant Collection. This film is simply a beautiful conversation with Senior Principal, Bill Johnson and Project Lead Designer, Brittany Stafford about the dearness of this project to their hearts and their sense of design.
With this year’s NBAA show approaching we have been asked by multiple groups – both internal and external – to share the “why” of our work in aviation interiors and leather.
Like most adventures, you begin with the destination in mind. You have what seems to be a clear idea of the path – or in this case the flight path – you are about to take. But like most transformational moments in life you realize the journey becomes your destination. Sure, you begin to sound like a cheesy motivation poster with hands in a huddle or two leaf-covered paths, but the honest bone-deep truth is that the road you take really shapes your perspective on the arrival.
Our journey into the world of aviation interiors has been anything but simple. There have been humbling and soul-searching bumps along the way. But over the last 10 years there have also been moments of sheer joy and excitement. It is this mix of emotions that press on our chest a little and make us really ask why are we doing this? Why are we working so hard to offer something so new…why not just settle for what everyone else has accepted as the norm in our little section of the great big world of aviation business.
Here is the honest truth. Since we were little kids, the dream of flying has always been with us. Starting with paper airplanes and even daily staring into the sky any time we heard the roar of a jet – these things have turned into life-long, personal and professional passions for members of our team. Matt Buckley, SVP of Sales & Business Development, grew-up in the midwest and at the age of 5 was climbing up into the seat of a plane beside his decorated Air Force father. Add to that the backgrounds of both Chad Evans, Director of Aviation and representative Beverly McAuley and you will find a team of people who have merged their love of leather with a lifelong passion for flight.
That is why our goal remains to be a true design resource for the world of aviation leather. We have pushed hard. New colors. New leathers. Anything but status quo. Because we believe – just like as we did as children – that aviation is still meant to inspire. Its that core belief that has led us to continually invest and reinvest in our aviation division. This year we will launch Orion, a completely new leather that rivals the softest leather you have ever experienced. We are also bringing Celine Calf to the market – an extremely high-end leather, usually reserved for the exclusive fashion houses of France, this calf skin will truly raise the level of sophistication in our world of aviation.
And you’ll find at our headquarters in Virginia we have another four million square feet of reasons why we are passionate about our work. Each one carefully crafted by hand.
Aviation is not just another piece of the business. Its not just another column on the spread sheet. We are 100% dedicated to being a small part of a big world with wings.
It is with that fervor we find excitement and newness every time the door opens and we climb aboard.

We have tannery partners from around the world. This we received a great updated from our tannery partners in India who fund a free school with a percentage of the profits from Moore & Giles. The resources are directly used to offer education to 700 children in addition to sponsoring their uniforms, books, shoes and play materials. The children are also trained in yoga & karate! They expect even more students in the upcoming year. So proud to be a part of this work.
Participating teams each tackle community service projects within their own areas/passions for local non-profits and the projects are then judged by a national collection of judges to award the winners. The winners then receive funding for their non-profit. Congrats to this year’s 1st Place winners – TEAM ROCKSTARS
We are honored to serve Project Change and the families of the Kansas City Metro area. Over the last 6 years, Project Change is estimated to have saved the community over 1 million dollars, assisted 130 non-profits and helped thousands of lives.

Dresden – Marked by its luxurious, supple hand and beautifully pronounced grain, Dresden captures the essence of understated elegance. Crafted from pristine hides by a family-run tannery in Southern Germany whose operations span generations, it features a soothing and serene color palette that showcases the premium quality of the hides and remarkable attention to detail that goes into every step of the tanning process. Averaging 60 square feet in size, these hides are skillfully prepared to provide excellent cutting yields, making Dresden a versatile option for a range of upholstery applications.
Ragtime – Inspired by a beautifully distressed leather found on a pair of vintage Parisian club chairs, Ragtime is our answer to repeated requests from designers for a leather collection with an authentic, worn-in aesthetic. Crafted in Northern Italy from belting leather used by some of Europe’s finest fashion houses, its richly layered texture is complemented by a surprisingly soft hand that will continue to mellow and soften over time. Available in a range of classic colorways, this anything-but-ordinary leather will conjure up a mood of timeworn elegance in both traditional and contemporary interiors. Hides will average 20-22 square feet.
Diablo – Designed in Italy by a fifth-generation tannery, Diablo is marked by rich transparencies throughout the hide that evoke the elegant aesthetic of calfskin. Its luxurious look and feel is achieved through a vacuuming process that shrinks the leather to provide a smooth, polished surface that will continue to burnish and polish with wear, growing more beautiful with age. A sumptuous and sophisticated leather with an understated color palette, it offers the ultimate in refinement for today’s more tailored interiors. Hides will average 50 square feet.
Raven – Timeless and tastefully sleek, Raven was designed with the demands of today’s modern lifestyle in mind. A light finish makes it refreshingly low maintenance, enhancing its performance in high traffic areas and ensuring ease of cleanability. Available in an extensive range of dynamic colors, it features a slight polish and light pull-up that further enhance its visual appeal. Hides will average 50 square feet.
Himalaya – Evoke an air of the exotic with our Himalaya Collection. Ultra-luxurious and full of body, its lustrous strands are silk-like to the touch. Designed in Spain, this lush and decadently soft shearling is available in six of spring’s most sought after colors. Available in 2’x4′ panels.
Flourish – This boldly romantic and ornate embossing brings dazzle and drama to our Satin Suede collection. Reminiscent of the scrolls and flourishes in old world calligraphy, it cascades across the hide in rhythmic form. The depth of the embossing creates rich highs and lows while complimenting the suede’s soft hand. Available in any one of our 45 colors of Satin Suede, it will work beautifully as a decorative element on its own or in combination with our Satin Suede. Hides will average 22 square feet.

Produced collaboratively by Elle Decor, House Beautiful, and Veranda, the show houses — three separate installations designed by Alessandra Branca, Jamie Drake, and Carlos Aparicio. The building itself lends itself to this sort of glamour – NYC’s Walker Tower, a 1929 Art Deco style that was recently converted into ultra-high-end condos. We were happy to play a part with Drake Design Associates, utilizing our luxury leathers including this Chahan bench from 21st Twenty First covered in our Moore & Giles Pompeii leather.

We just moved into our new offices. Yes! That also means we had to “clean.” Noooo.
During the process we found the original remnant of Brompton, one of the M&G leathers that has built it’s own legend in our world. It represents a blending of today’s technology with the dedication and skill of Old World artisans from a one hundred fifty year old Italian tannery.
Look at this leather, just how amazing it looks after 11 years of tough wear and handling! This is NOT touched up in anyway – we just placed it on the design table as we were cleaning up. Back to the cleaning up…
This week we are in Las Vegas – Mandalay Bay at HD Expo May 15-17. Come see whats new – including our new booth (#4211)!
And you thought picking out a shirt was hard…Muriel and Bo are carefully selecting from our thousands, that’s thousands, of luxury leathers for the Showtime ITMA Event in June. Since its kind of a BD – the pressure is on! We led with some Emeralds in December but we may have a few more up our sleeve. Now onto finding a green button down to match.
